When a soldier returns from deployment, the very least he
deserves is a good night’s sleep. But for many veterans, a peaceful rest is
nothing but a distant memory. Tyler Skluzacek, a 21-year-old college student in
Minnesota, is working to change that. Tyler’s father is one of the 11-20
percent of veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. One of the
worst things about PTSD is that it causes night terrors that disrupt sleep. Tyler
has developed an app that monitors heartbeats and body movements during sleep.
It watches for symptoms that precede night terrors and responds by interrupting
deep sleep without waking the wearer. Tyler has named his app “myBivy,” after
the military slang for bivouac: a safe shelter. Tyler and his team hope to
start clinical testing early next year, with an official launch in the spring.
