Andrew Lumish is a self-employed carpet cleaner who works six
days a week. Sundays you’ll find him visiting cemeteries near Land O’Lakes,
Florida. Andrew likes to honor veterans and their families by cleaning grave
markers. He’s a history buff who seeks out those who fought in the Vietnam War,
the Korean War, both World Wars, the Spanish-American War, and the Civil War. He
often finds their stones are so dirty the inscriptions can’t be read. He uses a
soft-bristled nylon brush, a bucket of water and a Ph neutral cleanser that won’t
damage limestone, slate, marble or granite. “It's something that I feel I
should do to give them the proper respect for fighting for our country,” he
says. “They may not have any family still living.” He doesn’t ask permission,
but he’s never been chased away. “I may be trespassing, but it's a good kind of
trespassing. I'll take that all day.”
