Kings and Knaves

This may be just a parable, but it’s worth reading. A college economics professor illustrated the concept of socialism for his class by substituting grades for dollars. He averaged the results of their first test and everyone got a B. The A students were upset and the C students were happy. As the second test rolled around, the C students studied even less. The A students decided they wanted a free ride too so they studied little. The second test average was a D! No one was happy. The third test average was an F.  The class dissolved into bickering and finger-pointing. No one worked for the benefit of anyone else; everyone failed. Where there is a great promise of reward, the effort to succeed is great. Take away the reward and the effort disappears.
