Last autumn I pulled all the dandelions growing in my front
lawn and replaced them with purple crocus bulbs. They were slow to appear when
the snow receded, but they put on a glorious show. I’ve been receiving
compliments on my naturalized blooms for nearly four weeks. Last Saturday, as I
was admiring the last few crocuses, I realized with horror that dandelions are taking
over again. Sunday’s storms loosened the ground a bit, so I spent a happy hour
Monday morning pulling all the weeds I could see. At noon I brought John out to
see my work and – you guessed it – the bright sun had brought out hundreds more
yellow blooms. Three hours later I was convinced I really had pulled them all,
but when I checked again after dinner I counted at least a dozen more. Eternal
vigilance is the price of a weed-free lawn.
