For years I’ve done pretty much the same thing with my kitchen
garden, and I’ve had pretty much the same results. I plant about a dozen
different crops, evenly split between vegetables and herbs. Early in the season
we enjoy fresh peppers, lettuce, radishes, kale, etc. Then the heirloom
tomatoes and mint take over and crowd out everything else. This year I may bow
to the inevitable and just plant tomatoes. I might even pull the mint out
altogether. (I threaten that every year; it never happens.) Instead, I’m
thinking of putting herbs and edible flowers in pots on the deck: basil,
catnip, garlic, lavender, lemon balm, lemon thyme, lemongrass, marigolds and
rosemary. These are all plants that bugs (especially mosquitos) tend to avoid, so
dining al fresco should be a more pleasant affair.
