There are dozens of ghost towns in Utah; places where people
once lived because there were precious metals or coal in the ground that aren’t
there anymore, or where people thought they could grow crops, but the weather wouldn't cooperate. England isn’t like that. For the most part, there
are still people living where Vikings or Romans used to live. The only
exception I know about is Tyneham, in Dorset. Until World War II Tyneham was a
sleepy little coastal village near the Lulworth military firing ranges. Bigger,
more powerful guns and preparations for D-Day meant more space was needed for
target practice. So the 225 residents of Tyneham were served with “temporary”
eviction notices. It’s been 72 years, but Tyneham’s citizens are still waiting
to be allowed home. From time to time the area is open to the public. If you
go, stay on the path to avoid stepping on unexploded bombs.
