Josi Aponte was five years old when her Hartford,
Connecticut apartment building burst into flames. “Josi wasn't breathing and
didn't have a pulse when the firefighters pulled her out,” said Peter Getz, who
was a patrolman at the time. “I took her from the firefighter and started CPR.”
Getz jumped in the back of his patrol car and gave his keys to a recruit. They
drove to the hospital while Getz continued CPR. Josi began breathing again just
as they arrived. That was twenty years ago. Last Tuesday, Josi graduated magna
cum laude from Eastern Connecticut State University with a bachelor's degree in
accounting. She wanted to share the day with everyone who was important to her,
so of course Getz was there. “I am humbled and honored to be noticed for this,”
he said, “But everyone, firefighters, dispatchers, hospital staff, did their
part to save her.”
