I served many years ago in the presidency of the Special
Needs Young Women in Sandy. I
occasionally gave rides to the young women who helped with the disabled
members. I was taking one of them home one night when we passed by a grocery
store. I remarked, “I need to remember to pick up a cake mix. My son’s birthday
is Saturday.” “Really?” she replied, “Mine’s the day before that.” I asked her
how she planned to celebrate, and she said her friends had left for college
and she’d broken up with her boyfriend. She added, “You don’t know any nice,
unattached young men, do you?” As it happened, I did. My brother had just come
home from Germany, and he wasn’t seeing anyone. I gave him her number and he
showed up at her door with roses. Their kids are in high school now. I wish a
very happy (slightly belated) birthday to the sister I chose.
