Something from Nothing

It’s not just my imagination. The back-to-school sales at the mall really are starting earlier every year; because kids are going back to school earlier. When I was in grade school, summer vacation lasted pretty much until Labor Day. When my firstborn started kindergarten in the 80’s, he started just before Labor Day. Most of the kids were physically in school a few days before the three-day-weekend, but classwork didn’t start in earnest until the following Tuesday. Today some of my piano students are already through with summer holidays. The others are mentally at school, though they won’t be seated at their desks for another week. They know their teachers’ names and where to find their classes. They’re excited about school orchestra, and they’re already stressing about tests. Testing, they tell me, is why school starts so early now. Ugh. Testing. Now I remember why I’m so glad I don’t start classes next week.
