Early this year I purchased a starter set from
PrecisePortions.com: porcelain plates and bowls with markings to assist in
measuring servings. I especially like the plates, which are divided into three
unequal sections. One quarter of the plate is for meat , eggs, fish or poultry.
Another quarter is for starches and grains like pasta, corn, squash, potatoes,
peas or rice. That leaves half the plate for non-starchy veggies like tomatoes,
mushrooms, green beans, broccoli, Brussel sprouts, spinach or other greens. It’s
a subtle but important change; I never realized many of the meals I serve at
home (and nearly everything we eat when dining out) were more starch than veg.
For several months they’ve sat on my counter, a handy
reference guide for meal planning and plating up, even when I’m using my daily
china. Last month an unhappy glass tumbler slipped from my hand as I was
emptying the dishwasher. It fell on the new plates: a clear case of
murder/suicide. The plates were pricey, but they taught me a lot. If I
replace them, it will be with a set of disposable divided dinnerware.
