Road to the White House

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about self-driving cars. I’m not considering one for myself at the moment, but I wonder what walking, biking and motoring will be like when more of the cars I share the road with are autonomous. I have friends and family members who probably shouldn’t be behind the wheel for a number of reasons. It would be nice for them to get around safely and independently. It would be nice for me, too, to get where I need to go without worrying about impaired or distracted drivers. The other day I traveled for ten minutes behind a young woman who was applying mascara, shadow and eyeliner as she drove. She was clearly paying more attention to her own eyes than to anything outside the car. She’ll never know how many times she came very close to death. At least she would have left a good looking corpse.
