What do Village of the Damned, Horse without a Head, Time
Bandits, The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes, Remains of the Day and 10th
Kingdom have in common? Peter Vaughan, who passed away last week at the age
of 93. If you didn’t happen to catch him in any of these, (first of all, shame
on you, second, today’s a good day to remedy that), you probably know him as
Maester Aemon in Game of Thrones. Most faces you see on television or in the
movies are there because they’re easy on the eyes. Peter Vaughan wasn’t. Even
when he was a young man he was, well, homely. But he had undeniable stage
presence. Whether he played a villain or a hero, he moved the audience. He didn’t
appear in his first film until he was nearly forty, but he had a career that would make most movie stars very, very jealous.
