This quilt is from Kim Diehl’s Simple Whatnots Club #5. The
pattern calls for a 1” solid inner border and twenty-four 4” Hourglass blocks
surrounding a center of nine – well, I don’t know what to call them. The 6”
blocks in the center have elements of the traditional Churn Dash quilt block,
but they also resemble Illinois, Eddystone Light, Greek Square and Cups and Saucers. I’m sure
these blocks have a proper name, but I haven’t found it. Even before cutting
the fabric, I knew the mystery blocks would be trouble. It was easy to see that
on every side where the blocks join, the points would bunch up and refuse to
meet. So I redesigned the top as a series of half-square triangles,
quarter-square triangles and flying geese. Then I joined them together in rows.
The quilt pattern came with the option of tiny red appliqued tear drops on all the
cream diamonds and triangles. But that’s just crazy.
