Early this month I took my Bernina in for an overdue
tune-up. It wasn’t actually in need of repair, but I’ve put a lot of miles on it
these past three years. Other than replacing needles and clearing lint now and
then, I haven’t done much that you could call maintenance. I didn’t realize it
would be gone more than two weeks, or that I'd miss
it as much as I did. I used my Janome meanwhile; a lightweight machine I take
to quilting classes. It’s slow, it doesn’t wind bobbins well, and it has an
unfortunate tendency to skip stitches when it sews over bulky seams. Worst of
all, it has a wonky seam allowance guide. That’s why so many of the last dozen photos
have been paper-pieced blocks or old projects. Without reliable scant quarter
inch seams, accurate piecing is impossible. I’m happy to report the Bernina’s
back today, purring like a kitten.
