It was Christmastime in 1995, and Lena Paahlsson was doing
some holiday baking in her home in Mora, Sweden. To keep the dough out of her
wedding ring (and vice versa), she laid it on a clean work surface. But when
she went back the ring wasn’t there. The white gold band with seven small diamonds
she’d designed for herself, the ring Lena’s husband Ola had placed on her finger
on their wedding day was simply gone. Sixteen years later Lena was working in
her vegetable garden, harvesting carrots. One of the carrots was wearing her
ring like a crown! Lena and Ola have puzzled over how the ring ended up there.
It may have fallen into the kitchen compost bin or even been eaten by the goat
whose manure enriches the garden soil. They’ll probably never know for sure.
The carrot certainly isn’t talking.
