In 2011, Texas pastor Robert Brewer posted an infographic making
the following claims: “33% of high school graduates never read another book the
rest of their lives. 42% of college grads never read another book after
college. 57% of new books aren’t read to completion. 70% of US adults haven’t
been in a bookstore for the past 5 years. 80% of US families didn’t buy or read
a book last year. The more a child reads, the likelier they are able to
understand the emotions of others. And reading one hour a day in your chosen
field will make you an international expert in 7 years.” When pressed for sources
Brewer initially cited the Jenkins group. He eventually admitted these stats
were questionable and recanted any connection with them; which illustrates the
point that facts found on the Internet don’t have a publisher’s reputation to
back them up. For a better chance of reading the truth, open a book.
