Marcus Yensen met the love of his life at a dance studio in
1940. Madelyn was the instructor and he the pupil. They were married just a
month later, which makes perfect sense to me. It’s like that Billy Crystal
quote from When Harry Met Sally. “When you realize you want to spend the rest
of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as
possible.” They raised two boys and a
girl in their little brick home in Rose Park. Marcus worked as a Union Pacific
Railroad engineer and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Madelyn grew
a vegetable garden and sewed clothes for her growing family. After more than 74
years together, Marcus and Madelyn left this earth just hours apart. “Being the
gentlemen he always was,” their daughter said, “He held the gates of heaven
open so she could walk in first, then followed her.”
