In the heart of our town stands the Draper Park School,
built in 1912 in the Classical Revival style. It was named after Dr. John
Rockey Park (1833-1900). Dr. Park taught in Draper before becoming president of
the University of Deseret, the predecessor of the University of Utah. In the
1950’s a new wing was added to the school. For generations it was a place of
learning and growth. When we moved to this area, the building housed Draper’s
city hall, the library, and Draper Arts Council. Our family helped to stage My
Fair Lady, The Unsinkable Molly Brown, South Pacific, Fiddler on the Roof and
so many other musicals here. The school narrowly escaped the wrecking ball New
Year’s Day 2015. Today it is being restored by new owners Greg and Shelley
Godfrey, who say it may someday be home to a photography studio, a recording studio,
interior designers, a wood shop, even restaurants.
