I have patterns for thirty-one Simple Whatnot quilts and I’ve
made all but nine of them. Most of the ones I haven’t tackled (yet) involve dozens of
impossibly tiny appliquéd pieces. Hen Pecked (5 December 2016) is the smallest one at
only ten by eleven inches. I’m not sure how useful a 10x11” quilt is. It’s even
too little for the doll’s bed. It might make a nice placemat, if I had several
more that matched it. Maybe I should just use it as a mousepad. Five and Dime (9 February 2016) is the largest at 32” square – a terrific size for a wall hanging. Today’s top
is 14”square. I’ve made quilt blocks bigger than this. You’re looking at two
days’ work – one to make eighty 1x2" flying geese, and another to stitch them
all together. The whole time I kept thinking of my favorite Indian restaurant:
yellow rice pilaf, red tandoori lamb, and black napkins folded into lotus
blossoms.
