Today’s quilt top used fabric and the name from the Kim
Diehl’s Simply Whatnots kit, but not the pattern. The original design called
for twenty-nine 3” spool blocks, each with a 1” finished center and 1” half
square triangles in all four corners. The result would have been a quilt top
measuring 21” square; a bit large for a table topper, and a bit small for a
wall hanging. There was at least enough fabric in the kit to make two quilts
that size, so I decided to redesign it. The spools are now 4” finished, with 2”
centers and Y-seams instead of half-square triangles. It probably took a lot
longer to complete than the original pattern would have done, but I’m happy
with the way my now 28” square top turned out. And there are still enough
scraps left to make another one, if I decide I want to actually try following
the pattern.
