Senator Gaylord Nelson from Wisconsin, Pete McCloskey, a conservative
Republican Congressman, and Denis Hayes, an activist, founded Earth Day in
1970. They chose April 22 (a weekday between spring break and final exams) to
maximize student involvement. Those students are considerably older now, but
Earth Day’s still going strong. Here are a few quotes to help with motivation:
“Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot
change their minds cannot change anything.” – George Bernard Shaw
“He that plants trees loves others besides himself.” – Thomas
Fuller
“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed
citizens can change the world; indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” – Margaret
Mead
“You cannot get through a single day without having an
impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference and you have to
decide what kind of a difference you want to make.” – Jane Goodall
