Ann Turner Cook was born in 1928. She studied education and
journalism at the University of South Florida and other institutions, earning
several degrees, including a master’s in English education. She taught at Oak
Hill Elementary, Madison Junior High, and Hillsborough High School in Tampa.
After she retired from teaching, Ann became a mystery novelist. Unless you’re
familiar with her Brandy O’Bannon series, you’ve probably never heard her name.
But I guarantee you know her face. When Ann was five months old, an artist who
lived next door did her portrait in charcoal. (Ann’s family lived in
Connecticut then, where her father was a syndicated cartoonist.) Two years
later, Gerber announced they were looking for an image to put on their new line
of baby foods. Ann’s sketch was submitted, and her cherubic face has graced
Gerber baby food ever since. Ann is ninety-five now, but her bright eyes and
dimpled cheeks haven’t changed a bit.
