One of the consequences of membership in a church with a lay
ministry is that occasionally one is expected to provide instruction and
edification during worship services. I’ve been asked to give a 12-minute talk
during our sacrament meeting this Sunday. I was given a topic to cover, but was
told if I preferred a different subject I might speak on that instead. I’m
pretty sure they didn’t mean I could spend 12 minutes rattling on about the
lives of my favorite romantic composers or the best way to make a sourdough
starter or the intricacies of English paper piecing. Our former stake president
used to say, “Don’t prepare a talk; prepare the speaker.” Essentially, he meant
that I should study the scriptures, pray, and have faith that I’ll come up with
something other than 12 minutes of awkward silence this Sunday. Have faith:
coincidentally (or maybe not) the very subject I was assigned.
