She was granddaughter to two prophets: Joseph F. Smith and
Heber J. Grant. Florence S. Jacobsen was the sixth general president of the YMMIA
from 1961 to 1972, when loud rock music and miniskirts were parents’ biggest
fears. When she learned the Lion House was going to be demolished to make room
for a new church office building, she convinced David O. McKay to allocate
funds for its restoration instead. Within a few years the Lion House was a
profitable entity and the funds were repaid. She once said, “By treating myself
and others as worthy of the best that is possible, I find that people become
better. And I feel that this principle carries over into every area. By making
our environment as beautiful and as excellent as possible, we become a more
excellent people, mentally, visually, physically, and spiritually.” According
to her home care nurse, she still lives by this precept at the age of 101.
