Double Hourglass

February 2014 Matt Stopera was enjoying a drink at his favorite NYC bar. A passerby grabbed his iPhone off the bar and vanished. It’s ridiculously easy to do. Think about that next time you set your phone down beside your elbow. As soon as he missed his phone, Matt called it. The call went straight to voicemail. End of story, right? Nearly a year later Matt discovered photos on his iCloud account he hadn’t taken. Several showed a Chinese man standing by an orange tree. Matt, a Buzzfeed editor,  posted the story and photos of “Orange Tree Man,” and suddenly all of China was looking for him. Li, a 30-year-old restauranteur, had received Matt’s phone as a gift. Last month Matt flew to China to meet Li. They spent 9 days touring the countryside together, an instant traveling media circus. Matt and his new best friend, “Brother Orange,” are now planning another trip. That's right. To the Big Apple.
