March 29, 2011, Dr. Michael Shannon was involved in a
traffic accident with a semi that left him trapped in a burning car. The Orange
County Fire Department arrived at the scene and freed him from the car. Dr.
Shannon spent the next month and a half at Mission Hospital, recovering
from burned legs and internal injuries. During that time, Chris Trokey, one of
the paramedics who’d rescued the doctor, discovered that Dr. Shannon had saved
HIS life when he was a baby. 30 years ago Trokey was a preemie weighing only
3.2 pounds. He was given a 50% chance of surviving, but he lived; thanks to Dr.
Shannon’s tireless efforts on his behalf. “It’s amazing to watch them all grow up,” Dr.
Shannon said, “But to have one come back in your life on a day you really need
it, that’s incredible.” Today Chris Trokey is a father and Dr. Shannon is his
son’s pediatrician.
