Grandma's Other Dishes

I’ve never fired a gun, unless you count water pistols. I’ve never served on a jury or ridden a camel. I’ve never been to Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, or South America. I’ve never flown in a helicopter or jumped out of a plane. I’ve never been skinny dipping. I’ve rappelled down cliffs, but not the side of a building. I’ve gone skiing, but not snowboarding. I’ve ridden a motorcycle, but not driven one. I’ve broken bones but never worn a cast. I’ve never driven over 80 or ridden in a police car. (There may be a connection there.) I’ve driven cars with standard transmissions, but I never really got the hang of it. I HAVE stolen a traffic sign. A storm brought down the stop sign by my house last month. I stashed it in the garage until we could replace it. It’s back up now, and everyone is ignoring it. Just like before it blew down.

Stepping Stones

At a quilt class last month, we were served these along with a strawberry spinach salad. Delicious!

Hawaiian Sliders

24 thin slices ham

6 slices Swiss cheese, cut into fourths

1/3 cup mayo

1 tablespoon poppy seeds

1 1/2 tablespoons Dijon mustard

1/2 cup butter, melted

1 tablespoon Onion Powder

1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

2 packages (12-count) dinner rolls

Cut rolls in half and spread mayo onto the top of the bottom half. Place a slice of ham and a slice of cheese over the mayo. Replace the tops of the rolls and bunch them closely together into a baking dish. In a medium bowl, whisk together poppy seeds, mustard, melted butter, onion powder and Worcestershire sauce. Pour mixture over rolls, just covering the tops. Cover with foil and let sit for ten minutes. Bake at 350F for ten minutes, until cheese is melted. Uncover and cook for additional two minutes until tops are slightly browned and crisp. Serve warm.

Halley's Comet

In the heart of our town stands the Draper Park School, built in 1912 in the Classical Revival style. It was named after Dr. John Rockey Park (1833-1900). Dr. Park taught in Draper before becoming president of the University of Deseret, the predecessor of the University of Utah. In the 1950’s a new wing was added to the school. For generations it was a place of learning and growth. When we moved to this area, the building housed Draper’s city hall, the library, and Draper Arts Council. Our family helped to stage My Fair Lady, The Unsinkable Molly Brown, South Pacific, Fiddler on the Roof and so many other musicals here. The school narrowly escaped the wrecking ball New Year’s Day 2015. Today it is being restored by new owners Greg and Shelley Godfrey, who say it may someday be home to a photography studio, a recording studio, interior designers, a wood shop, even restaurants.
