In our church when a member of the congregation is about to
embark on a mission or a new baby is given a name and a blessing, it’s an
opportunity for extended family to gather. Sometimes this means a much higher
demand for seats at Sunday services. That’s what happened a week ago Sunday
in the Meadows Ward in Plainview, Utah. Some visiting family members tried
to save space for others who were coming late. One fellow ignored them and sat
down, prompting some angry words before the meeting. Afterwards in the parking
lot, the angry words turned to blows and eventually an arrest for attempted
vehicular manslaughter. One of my more creative friends wrote, “Jesus said love
everyone, unless they steal your pew. Hit them in the face for fun, and try to
run 'em over, too.” I guess some people just need church more than others.
