When the Declaration of Independence was adopted by Congress
on July 4, 1776, there was rejoicing in the streets. As John Adams said, “The
occasion of our nation’s freedom ought to be commemorated as a day of
deliverance.” Five months before
his assassination President John F. Kennedy called for the ringing of bells
nationwide on Independence Day, saying, “Let’s ring freedom
bells!” In the fifty years since,
his suggestion has gone largely ignored. But at 2:00 this afternoon, bells will
ring from church steeples and civic buildings in honor of the 237th anniversary
of our independence, thanking our Heavenly Father for his blessing on our land.
Shake any bell you happen to have. If you don’t have a bell, shake your keys or
tap on a glass. Or find a bell-like sound on your smart phone. Let freedom
ring!
