Crosses and Losses

Justice Louis Brandeis said, “Those who won our independence valued liberty both as an end and as a means. They believed liberty to be the secret of happiness and courage to be the secret of liberty. They recognized the risks to which all human institutions are subject. They knew that fear breeds repression; that repression breeds hate; and that hate menaces stable government. They did not exalt order at the cost of liberty.” I’ve never visited Venezuela or the Ukraine. But several of my friends have. And I have many friends with loved ones who call one of these places home. For them, when I read the news coming from these places, my heart aches. Joseph de Maistre is credited with having said, “Every nation gets the government it deserves.” Whether he really said it or not, he has a point. But I can’t help feeling when freedom is denied anywhere in the world, the whole world suffers.
