In Back to the Future 2, Michael J. Fox and Christopher
Lloyd travel from the 1980’s to a future where jackets dry themselves while you’re
wearing them, shoes lace themselves and skate boards float on air: 2015! Back
in 1989, Robert Zemeckis claimed the hoverboards in the film were real, but had
not been released to the public because of safety concerns. Footage of
"real hoverboards" was featured in the extras of a DVD release of the
trilogy. A number of people thought Zemeckis was telling the truth and called
Mattel to request hoverboards of their own. Most of them were jokingly told to “wait
until 2015.” Zemeckis never admitted to the hoax until the last installment of
the trilogy was released in 1990. Now 2015 is only months away. Not
surprisingly, new videos of “real” hoverboards are popping up everywhere,
proving that, regardless of the century, a sucker really is born every minute.
