On the Q.T.

It’s time to do a postmortem on this year’s vegetable garden. The broccoli was a raging success! We’ve never had broccoli we could brag about before. It always went to seed without ever looking edible. But this summer we ate broccoli until we were sick of it. I despaired over my heirloom tomatoes all summer – the plants grew to monstrous size, but the fruit was slow coming. Then in mid-October they all suddenly ripened. They were huge and juicy and tasted amazing. The onions were delicious, but I wish I’d planted more of them. Ditto the beets and garlic. We had a few lovely bell peppers and some nice jalapenos. The herbs did well, too. If the bees ever leave them alone I’ll cut and dry some to use through the winter. My one disappointment was the eggplant. The stems, leaves and flowers looked healthy, but there was nothing to harvest.
