Square Miles

Two years ago Arizona and Nevada announced their intention of joining Phoenix and Las Vegas with a shining new interstate corridor that would extend south to Mexico and north into Canada. This month an expensive two-year feasibility study was completed and accepted.  “Transportation is a primary driver of commerce, jobs and tourism,” Arizona Governor Jan Brewer has said. “This is why Interstate 11 is such a critical investment in our future, as it opens new possibilities for our state while connecting communities and economies.” I agree this is exciting stuff. But I have more questions than answers. When will I-11 construction begin? How long will it take? How much will it cost? How will it be funded? Will the northern end go through Reno or Boise? Will it make our border harder to secure? Will the project divert commerce (or water – as desert dwellers we always worry about this) from the state where I live?
