Ronan and Emma Lally have day jobs, but in their spare time
they run a small farm 70 miles from Dublin. Last spring they decided to add
ducks to their menagerie. They bought a clutch of fertilized eggs from a
neighbor and gave them to a broody hen to hatch. Three ducklings did hatch, but
they disappeared shortly after. Ronan assumed the barn cat he called “White Cat”
had made a quick meal of them. She was responsible for their disappearance, but
she hadn’t eaten them. She’d run across them in the barnyard moments after her
own kittens were born. Her instincts told her to nurture these warm fuzzy
babies, so she did. When the Lallys found White Cat, (she’s actually a tabby
with white spots) she appeared to be happily nursing two kittens and three
ducklings. Cats are funny that way. Just when you think you know what they’ll
do, they serenely go about doing the opposite.
