When we packed for our last overseas move there were several
things we couldn’t bring. Food wasn’t allowed; not even the contents of our
salt and pepper shakers. We couldn’t pack any animal products, so wax candles
and crayons were out. We couldn’t bring batteries of any kind. That meant we had to remove
and toss the batteries from our pencil sharpener, our flashlights, and all our
clocks. It was pretty much the same story with the things we left in storage
while we were gone: no batteries of any kind. In March of 2012, when our boxes
arrived from overseas and from the storage unit, we dropped a good deal of cash
replacing all those batteries. That was precisely 193 weeks ago. Over the past
seven days, I’ve had to replace every single one of those clock batteries.
Again. Because apparently 193 weeks is exactly how long it takes for a clock battery
to wear out.
