Returning Echoes

In 1930, an Illinois baker noticed when strawberries were out of season the machine that made cream-filled shortcake just took up space. He substituted a banana flavored cream and named his new product Twinkies. World War II made bananas hard to come by so the filling reverted to vanilla. By then no one cared whether there were strawberries or not. In January of this year Hostess, the company that made Twinkies, filed for bankruptcy. Hostess said consumer tastes have migrated to healthier foods. Caught between higher demands from unionized workers and a lower demand for their product, Hostess announced this week that it would stop all production. I feel sorry for the people left without jobs, especially so close to Christmas. But I can’t really feel for the people mourning the loss of their favorite mass-produced snack cakes. They really weren’t all that good, or that good for you. Maybe it’s time we all moved on.
