There are two kinds of strokes; one caused by a blood
clot and the other by bleeding in the brain. The second kind isn't easily
treated, but the first may be dealt with and reversed if it’s caught in time. For
this reason it’s important to be aware of the warning signs of strokes:
Trouble walking – The victim may trip or stumble, or
complain of sudden dizziness.
Trouble speaking – Speech may be slurred or difficult to
understand. The victim may seem confused.
Trouble seeing – The victim
may complain of double vision, or of loss of sight in one or both eyes.
Paralysis, weakness or numbness, especially on one side –
Ask the victim to raise both arms above the head, to smile or to stick the tongue
straight out.
Sudden, severe headache – It may be accompanied by
dizziness, nausea or vomiting.
If you notice any of these signs in yourself or someone
else, call 911 right away. Every second counts.
