Bethlehem Star

My amaryllis is blooming, and it’s beautiful! Amaryllis is such a grateful flower; low maintenance and high return. You start by soaking the bulb in lukewarm water for a few hours. Then you plant it in a shallow pot, being careful not to hurt the roots or to bury the neck of the bulb too deep in the potting soil. Place the pot in a warm, sunny spot (mine’s in an eastern kitchen window). Keep the soil moist but not wet. I’ve noticed it will drink more when it begins to bloom. It should bloom for about 2 months. After the flowers fade, allow the leaves to continue feeding the bulb. When the leaves finally begin to yellow, clip them a few inches from the bulb, remove bulb from soil and store in a cellar or fridge at least six weeks. Then you can start all over again.
