I’ve taken part in the Utah State Fair Quilt Challenge for
seven consecutive years. The rules are simple. You pick up a fat quarter of the
challenge fabric. This year’s print looked like a red bandana. You design a
wall hanging to display more than half this fabric on the front. You piece or
applique the top, add a back and batting, quilt it, bind it and add a label and
a hanging sleeve. Then comes the hard part: you wait a week while the quilts
are judged. I was proud of this year’s quilt. I made 48 tiny 2” bear paw
blocks, one for each color in the big Crayola crayon box. Every one of those teeny
triangle paws came out right. I honestly believed it was my best work. So I was a
bit disappointed when it earned third place. I know I should be pleased that it
got a ribbon at all. So many lovely quilts didn’t.
