Someone in Ogden has more dollars than sense. Two weeks ago
an unnamed patron left very large tips at a golf course and two downtown bars.
One bar reported a $1000 tip on a $49 bill. The second was paid a $5000 tip on
a $214 tab. A woman running a golf course beer cart received another thousand
dollars. Whoever he was, the tipper was obviously fond of beer. There’s been
speculation that he may be Sir Richard Branson, a British billionaire who was
in town for an entrepreneurs’ conference. You don’t have to call Sir Richard
and ask. It wasn’t him. As a rule Brits don’t tip; not even the very wealthy
ones. The question isn’t, “Why don’t they?” We should really be asking, “Why do
we?” Would it be so hard to pay waiters, bellhops and barmaids a decent wage
and adjust the price of meals, hotel stays and drinks to match?
