Recently I’ve seen some favorite shops forced out of local
malls for refusing to open their doors on Sunday. I understand the malls have
been pressured into this by anchor stores under the impression that having the
whole mall open will improve sagging Sunday sales. I’m reminded of a quote from
the movie That Thing You Do: “I don't believe I want to live in a country where
you have to stay open on Sunday to do business.” I lamented the disappearance
of blue laws to my son the other day, and he asked if they weren’t unfair to the
people who WANT to shop and dine on Sunday. Maybe he’s right. Instead, maybe we
should pass a law mandating that each non-essential business (excluding
hospitals, gas stations, etc.) be closed at least once a week. Christians could
rest on Sunday, Jews on Saturday, Muslims on Friday. You could take off
Wednesday, if that’s what floats your boat.
