When I was a piano student my
teacher kept stacks of old National Geographic magazines in his studio. They
whiled away many hours while I waited for my sister’s lesson to end and mine to
begin. In my own studio I keep children’s books for the same purpose. I usually
display about a dozen at a time and rotate them once a month. Many of them are
as old as those dog-eared magazines. This year The House at Pooh Corner by A.
A. Milne will be 85 years old. The Story of Ping by Marjorie Flack and Kurt
Wiese is 80. The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkein is 75. The Little Prince by Antoine
de Saint-Exupery is 70 years old. Blueberries for Sal by Robert McCloskey is
65. Madeline’s Rescue by Ludwig Bemelmans is 60. Where the Wild Things Are by
Maurice Sendak has been in print 50 years. How many of these have you read?
