What do you do with your leisure time? The answer may be
more important than you think. Hobbies can enrich your life in so many ways.
They can elevate your mood, enhance your creativity and improve your focus.
They can boost your social life. They can even help you perform better at
your job. Some people watch birds, restore antique cars or collect stamps or
coins. Others build models, play music or search for lost treasures with metal
detectors. I enjoy making these daily quilt blocks. There’s a symmetry and
rhythm to it that’s difficult to describe. It relaxes me. I just wish my
friends understood the ability to piece a quilt isn’t the same thing as the
skill necessary to alter or repair clothing. My husband loves fly fishing. He
does catch-and-release, so we don’t get trout or catfish dinners. But he nearly
always comes back with a better attitude than he left with.
