Columbus discovered the Cayman Islands in 1503. He named
them “Las Tortugas” after the abundant sea turtles. There were no natives
living there when he arrived, and archeologists have found no evidence that
anyone had ever lived there until then. Over the years it’s been home to
pirates, refugees from the Spanish Inquisition, shipwrecked sailors and runaway
slaves. The Caymans are a British dependent territory with strong ties to the
US. American visitors to the Caymans must deal with left-side driving, while
British tourists have to bring adaptors for their electric razors. One of the
most popular attractions is a 5.5 mile stretch of white sand called “Seven Mile
Beach.” A visit to the Caymans is incomplete without a trip to “Hell,” a series
of creepy limestone formations with their own post office and gift shop. You
know, so you can mail off a shirt that says, “My mom went to hell and all I got
was this T-shirt.”
