If you’re like me you receive several letters at this time
of year. You may also write an annual Christmas letter and send it to people
who otherwise wouldn’t hear from you. If you do or you’re thinking it, here are
a few simple tips: First, keep it simple! No one will wade through three pages
of your family’s doings. If you can’t say what you need to on one side of one
page, you should probably write more than once a year. Second, don’t put a happy face on all your
news. If the dog died, you lost your job or your wife ran off with the mailman,
go ahead and be sad. Third, don’t let your letter be ALL news. Sure, we’d like
to hear that you took a trip to Hawaii or broke your leg skiing, but we’d far
rather hear how you feel about it. Did it rain every day in Waikiki? Did the
pretty intern give you her phone number?
