Plato was an ancient Greek philosopher living some three to
four hundred years before Christ. Born to a wealthy and influential Athenian
family, he was a student of Socrates. But he also would have been carefully taught
in mathematics, music, gymnastics and grammar by the foremost scholars of his
age. Music was a very different study then. The ancient Greeks had a form of
musical notation, and they were aware of the mathematical rules governing harmony
and dissonance. They used seven modes, which they named after Greek clans:
Mixolydian, Lydian, Phrygian, Dorian, Hypolydian, Hypophrygian, and Locrian. Each one was thought to engender
or enhance a different mood in the listener, which sort of gives more meaning to
the above quote. Another Plato quote that I like is, “One of the penalties for
refusing to participate in politics is that you end up being governed by your
inferiors.”
