I’m told I have an unusual voice. Inside my head it seems
rather nice, but I find recordings of my voice sound nasal and annoying. So I simply
don’t listen. I did some work during college as a radio dramatist. I got paid –
not much – and I enjoyed doing it. I never listened to any of it. I guess I can
relate to Erik Bauersfeld, the voice actor who played Admiral Ackbar in Return
of the Jedi. He was shown a picture of the fish-like alien so he could imagine
how its voice might sound. He spent less than an hour recording a dozen lines,
including, “It’s a trap!” He was offered no direction. His part was added late,
so he received no screen credit. Suddenly he’s getting autograph requests for a
role he barely remembers. It might be fun to receive that kind of attention.
But it wouldn’t induce me to listen to my own recordings.
