Color value is a term quilters use to describe how light or
dark a color is in relation to surrounding colors. Color value helps quilters
decide how to arrange prints to make them either blend or contrast with each
other. I was browsing in a quilt shop last month when I ran across what looked
like bright red sunglasses. I couldn’t imagine why quilters would be interested
in such a product, so I asked about it. The employee smiled and said, “Put them
on, then look at the bolts of fabric.” I did, and was amazed to see the red
lenses had reduced all the prints to different shades of grey. With all the colors
gone, it was easy to see which prints had a strong value and which did not. I
didn’t buy the glasses, but I’m beginning to wish I had. If I’d used them in
planning today’s block, it might have turned out less muddy.
