I was 10 when Brady Bunch first appeared on television. I don’t
think I missed a single episode. I liked the story about a blended family
learning to get along. I related to the girls, especially Jan. But Alice was my
favorite character. I used to fantasize about what my life would be like if
Alice was part of my family. The house would always be spotless, even my own room.
The laundry would always be done, so when I wanted to wear my purple jeans or
my green-and-orange vest, they wouldn’t be at the bottom of the dirty clothes
hamper. Whenever I got home from school, Alice would always be there in her
crisp blue uniform, pulling chocolate chip cookies out of the oven. Ann B.
Davis, who played Alice on the television show, died Monday. She was 88; which
is probably too old to do my cooking and cleaning and laundry, anyway.
