The year I graduated from high school he was the coolest
thing on two wheels. Erik Estrada was in other TV shows before CHiPs, but I
never saw them. For those too young to remember the early 80’s CHiPs
stands for California Highway Patrol. I missed the first season, but during
season two I married a fellow who owned a TV set. We watched Officers Ponch and
Baker every Thursday night. It’s not like we had much choice. There were only
three channels then, and no way to record anything. The show was cancelled in
1983. After that, if you wanted to watch Erik Estrada, you’d have to be into
telenovelas. But if you rocket through Fremont County, you might just get his
autograph on a speeding ticket. Estrada was a full-time deputy sheriff in
Virginia seven years ago, but these days he serves as a reserve police officer
in St. Anthony, Idaho.
